Does your module allow the active class to be set so that using it as a menu on the side of a page, I can highlight the currently viewed article and when changing to another article in the list, the highlight would change?

For example

list item 1
list item 2
list item 3

On entry into the section where the module runs, item 1 is highlighted as it is the latest article, for example.

User clicks on item 2 and it changes to:

list item 1
list item 2
list item 3

I desperately need this and Joomla Latest News doesn't do it on its own.

Hello,
no, the module does not do that, it was no meant to be used as a menu in the first place. But what you are trying to accomplish makes sense and I will try and add it in a later update.
